Scottish Schools Adolescent Lifestyle and Substance Use Survey (SALSUS)23rd June 2009 sees the launch of the National Report 2008. The Scottish Schools Adolescent Lifestyle and Substance Use Survey (SALSUS) is part of an important and long established series of national surveys on smoking, drinking and drug use. Information has been collected in Scotland from 1982 on smoking, 1990 on drinking and since 1998 on drug use. The latest survey was carried out during the autumn term of 2008 with a sample of over 10,000 pupils from S2 and S4 classes from across Scotland.
The survey series also provides figures every four years (from 2002) for the local prevalence of smoking, drinking and drug use across local authorities and NHS Boards comparable with national prevalence figures. The 2006 survey findings are widely used in local areas, for example in local prevention and education activities and to inform local service planning. While the 2008 survey provides information at national level only, arrangements are in place for the next survey which will take place in Autumn 2010 which will also provide information at a local level. This will sample around 34,000 pupils across S2 and S4 classes in Scotland in order to provide good quality local information. The results from the 2010 survey will be published during 2011.
