2. Number of new reported cases of HIV infection among injecting drug users

Information on HIV infection in Scotland is collected by the Scottish Centre for Infection and Environmental Health (SCIEH).

Indicator

There were 25 new notifications of HIV infection among injecting drug users in Scotland during 1998, compared with 44 in 1997 and 34 in 1996, Figure 3.2. The number of new notifications in 1998 was the lowest of the last ten years.

As at 31 December 1998, there were a total of 1,210 reports of HIV infection in Scotland among injecting drug users, Table 3.1. Injecting drug users accounted for 41.9% of all known cases of HIV infection in Scotland.
